Institutions, laws, rules, all imported from the West, often confront on Romanian soil with adverse tendencies and interpretations, coming from the previous layer of civilization. There was a time when nothing seemed more natural in Romanian society than what we call corruption today. The West believes in rules (even if Westerners do not always respect them either). Romanians are quite skeptical about rules. Will we Westernize to the end? Perhaps there is no point in asking ourselves such a question anymore. The West is not what it used to be either. We are all heading, at an accelerated pace, towards a new world, very different from the world we have known so far. It remains for us to prove how prepared we are, both of us, to face the Great Change. — LUCIAN BOIA
