About

Hi, I'm George.

I guess the simplest description is that I'm a web developer based in Bucharest, Romania. I work as part of the DevMaverick project where along with a partner we provide web development solutions that involve WordPress, Laravel, VueJS, AstroJS and more.

We've been doing this for the past 10 years, providing robust solutions for various clients in different industries, helping them increase their revenue, visibility, and online presence.

Background

I started creating an online presence back in high school when I put together some static pages that presented different stats from my Counter-Strike 1.6 server for the regular players.

Fast forward some months I discovered WordPress and I was amazed by the idea of creating dynamic content that uses a database. I decided to start a blog right away and kept it running until the second year of university.

While the high school was computer science oriented, I never got inspired enough to go and get a degree in Computer Science at the university. I majored in Economics with a Master's degree in Project Management.

During those 2 years when I was getting my Master's degree, I stumbled upon Elance (now UpWork) and discovered that there are people who need help with their WordPress sites. I got in contact with a few of them, and one thing led to another by the end of the year I ended up getting a few projects.

By the time I finished my Master's degree it was pretty clear that I wanted to try and do this full time.

I'm interested in

A lot of things 😅.

I like to think of myself as a "Renaissance man", "a man can do all things if he will"1. Not a "jack of all trades and master of none" because I did manage to master a few of them.

I'm a very curious person and once I pick up an interest I'll run it into the ground (in a good, obsessive way) and learn all the details around it.

Here are some of them:

  • Music. I go to a lot of concerts. My playlist is mostly metal (with all its genres), sprinkled with some post-punk, stoner rock, but also all the new things that are thrown at me by Tidal's daily discoveries. Bought 2 guitars, still not playing them as much as I'd like.
  • Movies. Cult movies, classics, horror, mistery, SF.
  • Reading. Got a whole section on this site about the books I've read and liked. While most of the times I use ebooks, I do love traditional formats for comics/mangas and books with great hardcover art.
  • Photography. In 2019 I purchased a Fujifilm camera and started taking pictures. It's been a nice journey so far, learned about lenses, light, framing, and I got to the point where I know what I want to shoot and how it will end-up looking.
  • Watches. This is a good example of me having a little obsession. Thankfully, I didn't spent a lot of money in this direction. I do know too much about watches now.
  • Technology. Given my line of work it's somehow normal to have an interest in technology. But I don't like to have too many gadgets, if I need it I'll get it. In 2024 I started experimenting with my homelab.
  • Sport. Football, tennis, squash are up there on the list of sports I like to play. Basically anything that involves a ball. I enjoy watching football, F1, tennis, handball, rugby.
  • Gaming. Hours upon hours have been invested in this hobby. There are a few games that have thousands of hours on record. Apart from my enjoyment, I do believe there are other good outcomes from this, like fast decision making, problem solving skills and competitiveness.

My hot takes

I'm sure that more and more things are going to be added on this list.

  • you should learn CSS
  • PHP is good
  • not everything needs to be a library
  • most of the sites could be static
